2004 ==================================================================== FEATURED
THIS WEEK JOHN DEERE GREEN II Allis Chalmer's fuel cell-powered
farm tractor, circa 1959. This is the earliest
known vehicle application of a fuel cell. Historical
accounts indicate the 5,270 lb tractor required no
additional weights, but the stack, made up of 1080
individual cells, produced only 15kW or about 20
horsepower. It was fueled with a mixture of gases, but
predominately propane. MATT SIMMONS AND WIND POWER Matthew Simmons is the
founder of Simmons and Company, International, one of
Houston's leading energy industry investment bankers. He
is a highly respected energy analyst who believes the
world is rapidly approaching the cross-over point between
declining oil and natural gas production and world demand.
GOING TACTICAL Will tactical military initiatives
solve the problems that engender terrorism? Not according
to the founder and director of the Disclosure Project,
who calls for governments to seriously address the
intertwinned issues of terrorism, climate change, oil and
environmental destruction. |

executives, Jill Ledger, Francois Barsaq and Philippe
Ulrich. SAFT is the world's largest maker of NiCad
batteries, which find their way into a wide variety of
transportation applications from planes to trains and
increasingly now in hybrid trams and buses. HOW TO WEAN AMERICA OFF FOSSIL FUELS IN 15 YEARS The
Arlington Institute envisions an 'all-electric-world' by
2050 where virtually all forms of transportation are
electrically-powered. It proposes a 3-phase,
fifteen-year plan to rapidly transition the United States
away from petroleum to renewable fuels and eventually
hydrogen or some-as-yet-unforeseen energy source. |

THIS WEEK SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT - PART 2 Ballard EBARA PEM
fuel cell co-generation unit produces 1kW of electricity
and hot water from natural gas reformation. The unit,
which was launched in 2003 and is currently in field
trials in Japan, is intended for the Japanese
residential housing market. In 2003, Ballard delivered 15.5MW
of power generation capacity to customers in 20 countries
worldwide, according to Ballard spokeswomen, Debby Harris.
PAUL MOLLER'S FLYING CAR DREAM - PART 3 Model of M600
Skycar modified as a military cargo carrier and Medivac
vehicle. Moller claims that in simulated war games, the
side equipped with Skycars always wins. PRACTICAL, CLEAN ENERGY FOR FUTURE TRANSPORTATION
Ethanol plant in Tucumcari, New Mexico produces 3 million
gallons of biomass fuel annually from corn or milo; the
by-product of which is a valuable cattle feed. The author
argues that biomass fuels are a more practical, economic
pathway to a cleaner energy future than hydrogen HOW MUCH SAUDI OIL IS LEFT? Saudi Aramco desert oil
rig. According to company officials, the peninsula sits
on potentially as much as 900 billion barrels of crude
oil, as well as equally large amounts of natural gas,
enough to meet current oil demand for the next fifty
years |

2004 ==================================================================== FEATURED THIS WEEK SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT The
current state-of-the-art Ballard Mark 9 fuel cell stack,
an elegantly simple electrochemical 'engine' whose only
emission is pure water vapor. The automotive-tailored
stack is engineered to provide 1,500-2,000 hours driving
operation over a two to three year test period. PAUL MOLLER'S FLYING CAR DREAM - PART 2 Moller
Technologies' Freedom Wankle engine packs a lot of punch
in a small package measuring ten inches in diameter and
ten inches in length. Designed to power the company's
VTOL M400 'flying car,' each of the eight rotary engines
can produce a maximum of 160 horsepower. WORLD ENERGY PLAN TRIAGE Combining corn at season's
end. Under our modern, industrial agriculture system, it
takes 10 galores of fossil fuel energy to produce one
galore of food. What happens to food production when we
deplete the world's cheap fossil fuels? ADAM OPEL LEARNS A NEW TRIXX Opel TRIXX concept car

March, 2004 ==================================================================== HYDROGEN:
HOW SHALL WE STORE IT? It looks like your ordinary
Chrysler Minivan, but the 'Natrium' is unique. It
is powered by a fuel cell that uses hydrogen stored in a
chemical hydride, the distant cousin of which is Borax, a
common laundry detergent. Stored as a liquid
solution in a 40-gallon tank under the rear of the
vehicle, sodium borohydride passes through a catalyst,
releasing pure hydrogen to power the fuel cell. Natrium
is the first full-sized fuel cell vehicle to offer 300
miles range. PAUL MOLLER ON MOVING MOBILITY INTO THREE DIMENSIONS
Dr. Paul Moller has been on a thirty year quest to
develop a practical flying car for everyman. He
stands next to the wind tunnel in his Davis, California
research facility. His latest project is a military
version of his M400 VTOL Skycar, one that would
supplement -- at substantially less cost -- the US Marine
Corps' trouble-plagued, multi-billion dollar MV-22A
Osprey fleet. VIRTUOUS SUV Jaguar X-Type showing the location of a
Powerbeam. Ellis writes, 'How Jaguar would a straight six
gasoline engine sound, running up to 8,000 rpm and beyond
if pushed, but cruising all day at 2,500 rpm? Rather like
a V12, dear boy'. |

bus on Westminster bridge in London. The bus is one of
thirty fuel cell buses already in service or slated to be
deployed in ten European cities to demonstrate the
feasibility of a hydrogen-fueled transportation system. NASA'S WAY OUT EVS The first color photograph returned
from Meridiani Planum by 'Opportunity.' Note the unusual
soil marks created by retracting air bags, similar to
those made by it's compatriot, 'Spirit.' The first rover
now has been upgraded from 'critical' to 'serious'
condition as JPL works on solving its computer
malfunction. WHEN NEW YORK FREEZES OVER Al Gore castigated George W.
Bush as a 'moral coward' who is willing to sell out to
polluters in exchange for political power. The
former vice president not only demonstrated global
warming is real and man-made but also indicted the
current Administration for its abysmal environmental
record. HOW I'D WRITE A NATIONAL ENERGY PLAN Under the
author's plan, a whopping $4 a gallon federal tax would
be implemented over ten years to encourage carmakers and
drivers alike to be more conservative in their vehicle
choices. People could still buy gas-guzzlers like this
Hummer H2, but they'd pay for it... big time! |

We have distributed in that time millions of pages of EV-relevant information. But we have reached a plateau and if we are to continue to grow and help inform a world that is increasingly interested in "green," sustainable mobility options, then we need your help. So on January 1, 2004 EV World inaugurated a paid subscriber support model for access to what we are calling our "premium" content. This is material we author, including coverage of industry trade shows, conferences, workshops, and symposiums. It also includes our exclusive interviews with industry leaders, visionaries, engineers, policy makers and entrepreneurs. Paid subscribers receive an ENHANCED version of EV World Update which includes the weekly "My Perspective" editorial comment, as well as links to all of the past week's EV world-related news stories and press releases. Of course, much of EV World remains free to all who visit and unlike many news sites, we do NOT require registration. However, access to our archives is now limited to material older than 12 months. So, if you want to stay "plugged into" the EV World, we urge you to subscribe for $29.00US annually. You can do this either online through PayPal.Com or by cash/check. We recognize that many, if not most of the 80-130,000 visitors who log onto EV World each and every week will not wish to subscribe and we understand. But if you feel we offer value for the money, then this is your opportunity to tell us so, and help us move this publication off its current plateau to new and greater heights. Regardless of whether you chose to subscribe or not, we assure you that you will continue to receive EVWORLD UPDATE[basic] for free, as our way of saying thanks for being a loyal EV World reader.
